The independent MSP register.
WhatMSP exists for one reason: choosing a managed service provider is harder than it should be, and most directories are pay-to-play. We built something different — ratings based on merit, not money.
Buyers couldn’t compare MSPs objectively. So we fixed it.
Ask three IT support companies for a quote and you’ll get three documents that look nothing alike. Different pricing models, different definitions of “managed”, different security postures — and no neutral way to line them up. For a business owner who isn’t a technologist, it’s nearly impossible to tell a genuinely strong provider from a confident salesperson.
Meanwhile, the directories that should help are mostly auction houses: the provider who pays the most sits at the top, regardless of whether they’re any good. That’s a disservice to buyers, and it’s unfair to the excellent smaller MSPs who can’t out-spend the loudest marketers.
WhatMSP is the answer we wanted to exist. Every provider is independently assessed against the same evidence-based framework and scored out of 50. The result is a register you can actually compare across — where the ranking is earned, never bought.
Three values, no exceptions.
Independence
No provider can pay for a better score or a higher position. Our ratings come from a structured audit of verifiable evidence — never from advertising spend. The leaderboard is ordered by score alone.
Transparency
Our methodology is public, down to the points available in each category. You can see exactly how a provider was scored and which records we checked. No black boxes, no “trust us”.
Honesty
If a provider doesn’t meet the baseline, we say so — and we don’t take their money for a badge they didn’t earn. We’d rather list fewer providers honestly than many dishonestly.
Honest about the money, because it’s the whole point.
A platform that claims to be independent owes you a straight answer about how it’s funded. Here’s ours: providers pay for the independent audit, and they can choose to pay for a premium listing. That’s it.
Crucially, neither of those payments touches the score or the ranking. Paying for an audit gets a provider assessed — not a better result. A premium listing buys presentation, not position. And buyers never pay a penny.
Browsing, comparing and getting matched is free, with no sign-up and no data sold to providers.
The audit fee gets a provider assessed against the framework. The number that comes out is whatever the evidence supports.
Ranking is by score, full stop. A premium listing never moves a provider up the leaderboard.
Every provider, the same yardstick.
Each provider is scored out of 50 across security & compliance, capability, trust & reputation, service quality and reliability. Credentials are verified against Companies House, IASME, UKAS and the ICO. It’s the same yardstick for everyone — which is exactly what makes the comparison meaningful.
We’d love to hear from you.
